An occasional activity geared towards experiencing "lived spirituality" in communities with spiritual traditions (e.g. indigenous groups).


Round-Table Discussion among the "Men and Women in Filipino Spirituality" on May 8, 2003 at the Titus Brandsma Center in New Manila, Quezon City. The participants shared their respective insights on "spirituality" as experienced in the Philippines.

The participants were Sr. Mary John Mananzan OSB, Sr. Virginia Fabella MM, Sr. Mary Rosario Battung RGS, Dr. Teresita Obusan, Prof. Grace Odal-Devora, Albert Alejo SJ, Leonardo Mercado SVD, Prof. Rebecca Añonuevo, Marlon Lacal O. Carm., Christian Buenafe O. Carm., Rico Ponce O. Carm, and Prof. Ton Danenberg.


Reflection/Integration with Banwaons in Agusan: Exploring Lumad (Indigenous) Spirituality.

There were eleven (11) participants in the Integration trip with the Banwaons, an indigenous community in Agusan, Southern Philippines on October 29-November 1, 2003. The participants engaged the Banwaon baylans (shamans) and datus (traditional leaders) with meaningful discussions on their notions of being shamans and leaders; of having abian or “spirits as guides”; and of the roles and ways in communicating with the Magbabaya (Divine Other).

The participants were Karl Gaspar CSsR, Leonardo Mercado SVD, Felice Imaya Calingayan OSB, Eufracina Bandigan MA, Rosario Battung RGS, Dr. Teresita Obusan, Mary John Dumaug RGS, Sonia Punzalan RC, Efren Borromeo SOLT, Dionisio Ramos O. Carm., and Ms. Maria Rowena O. Ladaga.


Researchers’ Colloquium on Methodologies in the study of Spirituality in the Philippines on June 28-30, 2004 at the Titus Brandsma Center in New Manila, Quezon City. About 60 participants from different research institutes, universities, non-government organizations and religious communities participated.

The topics explored by the speakers were:

"Ancestors, dreamers, spirit-intermediaries and warriors": A Public Lecture - Bro. Karl Gaspar, a Redemptorist missionary, justice and development worker, poet and respected social scientist, presented his insights on the roots of Filipino indigenous spirituality and its relevance to the quest for an empowering Pinoy Spirituality from a historico-anthropologic perspective. About 80 individuals from different research institutes, development organizations, academic universities, religious congregations and seminaries attended the two-hour Public Lecture on October 25, 2004 at the Titus Brandsma Center, Quezon City.

Colloquium on Spirituality and Development Work - in coordination with the Management for Organizational Development and Empowerment (MODE), a training institute, ISA organized an afternoon-long discussion among 42 development workers on August 26, 2005 at the Crispin Hall, Titus Brandsma Center. The gathering provided space for development workers who have continued in this field for more than 10 years to share their insights on what sustains and nourishes them in their work. Fr. Carlos Ronquillo, CSsR and Ton Danenberg presented discussion papers culled from the results of their research on Spirituality and the Social Movement. The participants also expressed their desire to have more gatherings to deepen the discussion on this topic. Hence, ISA shall undertake this as an in-house research project.
